Since I’m going to spend Christmas in Boulder this year, I’ve been learning about how Eco-friendly the St Julien Hotel and Spa is! Namely, because for the past four years, St Julien has hosted an annual sustainable gift wrapping contest for employees. The winners receive cash prizes, but all of the gifts wrapped in recycled items are displayed under the hotel’s Christmas tree throughout the holiday season. They hope this will help inspire others to do their part, as well.

They pulled items that could otherwise end up in the trash and gave them a new life by creating fun, recycled holiday wrap with them, instead. Since this DIY activity is right up my alley, I created some alternative gift wrap ideas, too and shared them with my “Everyday” Show co-hosts, Chris Parente and Kathie J. Hopefully this inspired you to trim your gift-giving “waste-line,” too. Below are some of my DIY tips:
1. Use most of what’s around your house already.
2. Design with your recipients’ interests in mind (for example, music paper or a map if this person loves music or travel, respectively).
3. Remember that simple and small details truly stand out (don’t shy away from accessories like buttons).
4. Make the wrapping part of the gift (for example, a new dish towel).
5. Make a weekend day or night out of it! Invite your girlfriends over to DIY recycled gift wrap, Drink wine and dance to Christmas music between gifts!
