Yesterday, I went to the “Hippie Chic” exhibition at The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. And who better to check this out with than my my mom who grew up in the 60’s / 70’s — and whose vintage “hippie chic” pieces I wore to A, pay respect to the actual exhibit itself and B, why not dress the part.
I learned, many ethnic influences inspired the hippie era and as my mom pointed out, so did her shirt that I was wearing. Everything from the colors, fabric, sleeves, and beading is definitely there.

Also in the “ethnic hippie” collection was this “ribbon-trimmed shirt”, which caught my attention by the look alone, but it was the description that really interested me:
“The Sidereal Times boutique in LA based its ribbon-trimmed shirts (both for men and women) on originals made by Native Americans in Oklahoma. The store was identified in Vogue’s boutique column as the favorite shop of Cher and her husband and co-star, Sonny Bono.”
Per my mom, boutiques were all the rage then, which is why Vogue (that I’ve now worked for!) dedicated a section within the mag.
And on the right — this colorful, pattern skirt with a belt tie and ballet leotard top was a look my mom said she and her friends used to wear all the time! (her friend Debbie’s mom would actually make the skirts!)

Some of the looks I especially loved were those of the early 70’s. My personal style is often influenced by the looks of this era, so I’ll admit I stared for quite awhile at all of the details in each piece.

What a groovy girls day we had checking out all the outfits and listening to classic hits off a vintage jukebox in the “Hippe Chic” exhibition — that ends tomorrow, so hurry up and go if you have the Monday holiday off!
